{Wednesday Wallace #31} – Back from Ethiopia!

Well I am back from yet another successful and amazing trip to Ethiopia.  The jetlag has left the building and I am back into the swing of things with heaps of emails, 2 weddings and an engagement shoot this week!  My DSLR photos are still being edited and will hopefully be posted in a couple of weeks but here are a few point and shoot snapshots of me and the kids to tide you over:)

As most of you know I spent a month in Ethiopia last summer working with the orphanage A Hope and I was blessed to be able to go back for 3 weeks this summer between weddings!  I spent most of my time back at A Hope.  My travel buddy Samantha and I put on a VBS (vacation bible school) for the kids, played games, sang songs and did endless crafts.  The kids were so responsive and eager to learn more, it was amazing.  It was priceless to see the same kids and continue building a friendship with them all.  I will share a couple highlights at A Hope.  One day Sam and I were able to go with the boys and watch their soccer game out in the fields about ½ mile off the orphanage compound.  These little boys don’t mess around they are awesome!!! After the game we began our ½ mile trek home and the thunder and lightening rolled in and we got caught in a torrential down pour.  It was awesome.  We ran home jumping in mud puddles and splashing each other.  We were soaked from head to toe and I think my converse and socks stayed wet for at least 4 hours.  It was so much fun.  Another amazing thing we were able to make happen was to take the older girls off the compound and buy them dinner.  We had a fun girls night out and ate and drank more sodas and coffee than imaginable (these kids love sugar… sugar in water, sugar in coffee, even added sugar to their cola)!  It was so much fun and one memory I will not forget!

I also made it out for a day trip to another orphanage that I love, Joshua Academy.  Although I only had one day I managed to squeeze in hours of soccer with the boys, singing and games with the girls and bubbles galore with everyone!  I also, brought the kids pics of them from last year and they were so excited.  I also left photos of the California coast and our nearby amusement parks.  They kids were blown away!!

Between volunteering at the 2 orphanages I was blessed to be able to squeeze a week in at a women’s shelter home. This was so rewarding and absolutely amazing.  Don’t get me wrong I love my kid time but there was a whole new level of bonding with these women close in age that I was able to talk with and get know.  We spent most of our days chatting, reading, teaching English and bible verses to.  These ladies are so smart and bright.  It was truly a blessing to see how joyful and positive they are and how much they love the Lord.  Most of them have been through tough times and situations that we could never imagine and yet they are so thankful to be where they are and have what they have.  I owe these girls a ton for putting my life into clear perspective!!

I was also able to spend a lot of time with some good friends from last year.  Sam and I met so many new people and made so many new friends that now I can’t wait to got back (hopefully in winter of 2012)!
